11/14/2011
Odysseus tells of his visit to Aiolia, where Aiolos Hippotades, manager of the winds, helps Odysseus and his crew get home. He puts wind in a bag that Odysseus carries on board his ship. Unfortunately, his curious crew decides to open the bag, and the released winds drive them away from home. The arrive at the land of the Laestrygonians, who eat most of Odysseus’s crew before his ship escapes. Then they land on the island of Aiaia, the home of Circe. She traps some more men and turns them into pigs. Odysseus, with the help of Hermes, gets her to release his men and help him reach home. She instructs him to visit Hades, where he will meet Tiresias, who will tell him how to get home.
- Who is the god of wind? What favor does he do for Odysseus and his men? Why?
- What is the mistake of some of the crew? What happens? How do even more men die after the “bag incident”?

Aeolus was the one who gave odysseus the bag of wind so Odysseus and his crew can get home safe.
Odysseus crew thought he had gold in that bag so they openned it up but instead it was the wind that brought them back to land of the Laestrygonians. Men got eaten by lotis eaters.
Circe turns some of the comrades into swine. Odysseus goes in with Hermes help and saved them.
Circe said that Odysseus cannot go to Ithaca directly, but instead had to detour to the land of Death, there to consult the blind prophet Tiresias. He can chart Odysseus course.’

1. The god of wind is Aeolus. He made a steady breeze to blow them back home because Odysseus entertained him for a month telling him tales of the Trojan War.
2. The crew got greedy so they tried to take Odysseus stuff which Aeolus gave him. They came to an island and there some of the men got eaten by giants.
3. She made them into swine and they had to suffer it and they couldn’t do anything about it. He does what Hermes the messenger of gods tells him to do. Drink the potion and then make the goddess swear an oath.
4. The final instructions Circes gave Odysseus was that he couldn’t get home if sailed there directly, first he had to go to hades underworld there he will meet the prophet Tiresias who will chart your course back home.

1) The god of wind is Aiolos Hippotades, and the favor he does for Odysseus is he gives him a bag of wind so that Odysseus and his crew can get home faster.
2) The mistake of the crew was that, since they thought that Odysseus was getting all the gifts and treasures from all those forgeign people, the crew got jelous. So when they saw that Aiolos also gave him something they decided to check what it is. But when they opened it, all the wind blew out and pushed them even farther from home. The reason even more men died was because, when all that wind blew out it brought them to the land of the Laestrygonian. That’s where an ugly giant decided to eat some of the crew members.
3) Circe turns some of Odysseus’s men that come to her house into pigs. The way Odysseus gets Circe to turn them back is he follows Herme’s intructions, which were: accept her potion (it would not affect him since he was under Herme’s charm), and when she pulls out her wand Odysseus had to unsheald his sword, then he made her swear a god oath.
4) The final instuctions Circe gave Odysseus was that he had to go to the land of death and consult the blind prophet Tiresias, who will chart his course.

1. The god of the wind is Aeolus; he gave Odysseus a leather bag with wind in it. He gave the bag of wind to Odysseus because Odysseus entertained him for a month about the tales of troy.
2. The crew’s mistake is that when Odysseus fell asleep the crew saw the bag of wind and got jealous because they thought it was a bag of gold. When the crew opens the bag they let loose a hurricane that blew them right back to where they had started off from. Then when they had rowed for 6 days straight they came to an island where giants live their all 11 ships were destroyed and all the people were eaten by the giants except Odysseus ship and crew.
3. Circe turns some of Odysseus men into pigs. Odysseus made Circe release Odysseus crew by making her swear a god oath to release his crew and not to harm them.
4. Circe tells Odysseus that he will not see his home land by just sailing straight home he would have to go to the Underworld and consult with the blind prophet Tiresias only he can tell Odysseus fate.

1. Ailos Hippotades is the god of the wind. The favor he does for them is give them a bag of wind that can take them anywhere they want because he liked him and for a month Odysseus entertained him with stories of Troy.
2. Some of the crew thinks that Odysseus is getting all the treasures and they aren`t. When they see the bag, they think it`s gold and open it. The wind sends them to the land where Ailos lives. Odysseus asked for help but Ailos kicked him out. He didn`t want to get punished by the gods for helping him. They sttarted ailing back home again and came to the land Laestrygonians and the king there is a man for blood. He snatches one of the men and eats him right there and then. They run to escape but the Laestrygonians ate them all but Odysseus`s crew that got away.
3. Circe feeds them a drug and turns them into hogs that she keeps in a pen. Odysseus to get his crew back, goes and has to eat and drink her wine but isn`t affected because Hermes gives him a herb called moly that would protect him and when she draws her wand, he is suppose to draw his sword. Then he makes her say an oath.
4. She tells him to go to Hades and give a sacrifise to the dead and to Tiresias and they will help him with his journey.

1. Aeolus was the keeper of wind. Aeolus was kind enough to provide a steady breeze to blow Odysseus home. He even gave him an assortment of storm winds to stow on board. Aeolus gave this offer because Odysseus entertained him for a month with tales of Troy.
2. Some of the crew saw the bag that Odysseus had and thought that the bag was filled with money so they opened it. Then the bag made a hurricane and blew the ship back to Aeolus’s island. After the “bag incident” Odysseus sent a group to see where they are and the crew was eaten by the Laestrygonians.
3. Circe turns the men into 9 year swine with her wand. Odysseus makes her turn them back to normal if they stayed with Circe and be her husband.
4. The final instructions Circes gave Odysseus was that he couldn’t get home if sailed straight to Ithaca , first he had to go to Hades in the underworld and meet a prophet named Tiresias who will give course to go home.

from Faliley:
1. Aelous gives Odysseus a bag of wind because he tells him stories about Troy.
2. The mistake the crew made was they opened the bag which sent them further away from home. Once they opened the bag, the hurricane dropped some of the men into the ocean.
3. Circe turned some of Odysseus’ men into pigs. He meets Hermes on the way, if he follows his orders he won’t be under his spell.
5. The final instruction was she tells him to go to Hades and find something there that will send him home.
