Book IX: How Odysseus visited the Lotus-Eaters and the Cyclops
11/09/2011
Odysseus tells Alcinous who he is and what things have happened to him sine he left Troy. He tells of his adventures in Ismarus, in the land of the Lotus-Eaters, and the in the land of the Cyclopes. He describes the Cyclopedias as “violent and lawless”, they have some trouble with one – men are killed and Poseidon’s vendetta against Odysseus begins.
- What was the effect of the Lotus plant?
- How heavy is the door of the Cyclops’ cave? What is the first villainous thing the Cyclops does?
- Why doesn’t Odysseus kill the Cyclops when he has the chance?
- What name does Odysseus give the Cyclops? How does this work as a good “trick”?
- How so they manage to get out of the cave?
- What foolish thing does Odysseus do? What does this say about his character and his long exile?
- What did the soothsayer predict to the Cyclops?
- What does the Cyclop ask his father to do?

1. The effect was they didnt want to leave that place if they eat the Lotus and Odysseus had to drag them back to their ships.
2. The door is very heavy at the Cyclots cave, the first thing cyclops does is he eats odysseus freinds.
3. Odysseus didnt kill him when he had the chance was because he wanted Cyclops to suffer or killing his freinds.
4.Odysseus gives his name as no one to Cyclops, and this was a good trick because when the other Cyclops asked him who did it he said no one.
5. They managed to get out of the cave by tieing themselves under the sheep, when the sheep went outside so did Odysseus.
6. The foolish thing he did was make fun of the Cyclops and told him his true name, this says about him that he likes to brag and because of that he was cursed by the gods and nobody wants to help me.
7. The soothsayer predicts that Cyclops will convice posiden to make Odysseus life a living hell.
8. Cyclops asks his father to crush Odysseus ship and make it extreamly difficult or even impossible for him to get home.

1. The effect of the lotus plant was that it made Odysseus men stay on the island.
2. The rock is so heavy that 20 teams of horses couldnt budge it. The cyclops kills and eats two of Odysseus’s men.
3. Because Odysseus realizes that only the cyclops can move the boulder guarding the entrance.
4. Odysseus says that his name is No-One to the cyclpos. It works because when Odysseus and his men poke an eye of the cyclops and he calls for the other cyclops and says No-One is using treachery.
5. They all hide in the animals fur and get off the animals when they are outside.
6. Odysseus taunts the cyclops as they are leaving. He has suffered so much that a victory got the best of him.
7. The soothsayer predicted to the cyclops that a man named Odysseus would blind him.
8. The cyclop asks Poseidon to exile Odysseus from his home for a very long time. And it is a 20 year exile.

1)The lotus plant makes men “disremember their homeward path” and Odysseus had to drag his men back to the ship after they had eaten it.
2)The door to the Cyclops’ cave is too heavy for Odysseus and the rest of his men to move. The first thing that the Cyclops does is he takes two of Odysseus’ men, smashes them, and eats them down to their bare bones.
3)Odysseus doesn’t kill the Cyclops because the Cyclops is the only one who can move the massive boulder that covers the entrance.
4)Odysseus gives the name “No-One” to the Cyclops and when the other Cyclops asked him who hurt him, he said no one is hurting me and the other Cyclops paid no mind to him.
5)They hide under the bellies of Cyclops’ sheep. When the Cyclops let the sheep out, he also let the men go too.
6)Odysseus brags to Calypso and gives him his real name. Odysseus is probably getting a little arrogant because he thinks nothing can stop him.
7)The soothsayer predicts that a man called Odysseus will come and blind him.
8)Cyclops asks his father, Poseidon, to destroy Oddyseus.

3. Odysseus didn’t kill him when he had the chance because only the Cyclops could stop the door to the cave.
4. Odysseus gives the Cyclops the name no one no one because if the Cyclops told anyone it would mean that no one did it.
5. Odysseus tied the goats together and managed to escape from the cave.
6. He told the Cyclops who burned his eye.
7. The soothsayer says that Cyclops will convince Posiden to make Odysseus life hard.
8. He asks his father to break Odysseus ship and make it hard for him to get home.

1. The lotus plant makes the people who eat it it forget what they were suppose to do or go. Makes them forget the desire of home, the men who eat want to stay and eat the lotus flowers.
2. The boulder was so heavy that not even twenty teams of horses could have budged it. The first evil and mean thing the Cyclopes did was pick up some men and bashed their brains out on the floor. Then he ate them raw, picking them apart and poking them in his mouth, bones and guts and all
3. Odysseus didn’t kill the Cyclopes when he had the chance because he knew that only the Cyclopes can remove the boulder from the entrance. That was the only way out.
4. Odysseus gave the Cyclopes the name “no one” so when the Cyclopes wanted help, he would say “no one” to the others and they will think that nothing or no one is bothering the Cyclopes.
5. Polyphemus the Cyclopes, heaved the boulder aside and spent the night by the open door, hoping Odysseus be stubborn enough to try to sneak past him, but made a plan. Tying goats together with ropes of willow, Odysseus hid a man under each group of three. When it was time to let them out to pasture, the Cyclops ran his hands over their backs but did not notice the men underneath. Odysseus clutched to the underbelly of the biggest ram.
6. The foolish thing was Odysseus saying his real name, his father’s name, and his home city name. The Cyclopes then told his father Poseidon and told him what Odysseus said to him.
7. The soothsayer predicts that Cyclops will convince Poseidon to make Odysseus life a living hell and make him suffer
8. The Cyclopes told his father to crush Odysseus and make him pay. To make odysseus take a long time to get home.

2.The boulder that closed the doorway of the cave was so heavy that 20 teams of horses couldn’t budge it.
3.Odysseus didn’t kill the Cyclops because he was the only one who could move the huge rock so that Odysseus and his crew could get out.
4.Odysseus told the Cyclops that his name was No-One. It helped them because when the Cyclops cried out to his neighbors that No-One was trying to kill him. The neighbors didn’t understand why he would call for help if no one was trying to kill him, and they left.
5.Odysseus took a bunch of goats and tied them in a group of three and hid a man under each group and went passed the Cyclops and he didn’t notice.
6.The foolish thing Odysseus did was that he boasted to the Cyclops and told him his true name and where he comes from. Odysseus became proud of himself of the cities he demolished. He thinks he is unstoppable and is helped by the gods.
7.The soothsayer predicted that the Cyclops will be blinded by someone called Odysseus.
8.The Cyclops asks his father (Zeus) to not let Odysseus return to his home, Ithaca.

1. The effect on eating a lotus plant is if you eat it then you might forget your homeward way.
2. Even two-and-twenty sturdy four wheeled carts could not have budged that boulder from the ground. The Cyclops grabbed two of Odysseus men and ate them like little mice.
3. Cyclops would have doomed Odysseus and his men because no one would be able to shove back the massive stone he set in the high entrance
4. Odysseus lies to the Cyclops that his name is No-One. When Cyclops got blind he cried to his fellow friends “No-One, No-One is using treachery!” And his friends left because they thought it was no body.
5. Odysseus hid under the ram’s belly.
6. Odysseus tells his real name to the Cyclops. I personally think that was just a brag and Odysseus disguised himself as a hero.
7. The auger said to Cyclops that he will be a victim of Odysseus and Odysseus will blind him.
8. He asked Poseidon to not let Odysseus come home and let him be a battered man with all his comrades lost.

1) Those who feedon the Lotus plant do not have the least desire to leave the land of the Lotus-Eaters, or think about anything, feel anything. All they want to do is keep eating the Lotus flower and just hang out on the land the Lotus-Eaters live on.
2) The door of the Cyclop’s cave is very heavy! So heavy that “two-and-twenty sturdy four-wheeled carts could not have budged that boulder from the ground.” The first villainuos thing the Cyclops does is he stretched his hands and snatched two of Odysseus’s men at once and smashed them to the ground like pups. Then he cut them limb from limb, and then he supped-and like a mountain lion, left no shred, he ate every single part of those two men.
3) Odyseus doesn’t kill the Cyclops when he has the chance to because if he does, no one will be able to move the big boulder that blocks the enterance to the cave, the Cyclops is the only one strong enough to do it.
4) The name the Cyclops got from Odysseus is No-one. The reason the name worked for a good trick was when the Cyclops screamed and all the other giants came to check what has happened and asked him what was wrong he said “My friend, no force can damage me; No-one, No-one is using treachery.” And that made the other giants think that he’s kinda crazy, and they all left.
5) The way they managed to get out of the cave is they tied themselves to the stomach of the Cyclops’s rams and sheep, and the next morning the Cyclops was letting the animals go eat, both the animals and the men came out. Luckly the Cyclops didn’t notice the men under the rams and sheep.
6) The foolish thing Odysseus does is when they finally escape from the island and are sailing away from it he starts bragging about himself. Those actions tell me that Odysseus is a man who like people to know what he is capable of, and all the things he did.
7)The thing that the soothsayer predicted to the Cyclops is that he would be blinded by a man named Odysseus, that he would be a victim of him.
8) The Cyclops asked his father, Poseidon to keep Odysseus from ever reaching his land, for him to never come home back to his family and friends. 🙁

1. When someone eats a Lotus plant which is insidious, they forget about there land and don`t want to go home but stay forever.
2. The door is so heavy that twenty teams of horses couldn`t have budged it. The first villainous thing the Cyclops does was snatch two of Odysseus`s men and bash their brains on the floor and eat them raw ripping their limbs into pieces and eating everything.
3. Odysseus didn`t kill the Cyclops because he realized that only the cyclops could pick up the big boulder covering the entrance.
4. Odysseus tells the Cuclops that his name is No One. This works as a good trick because when the Cyclops called to the neighboring Cyclops. The Cyclops asked who was hurting him and he said No-One was. (Meaning Odysseus) So the other Cyclops left and didn`t help.
5. Odysseus found a tree trunck that they cut off a six-foot section piece and skinned it and made it pointy and hid it under a pile of dung. Next he said to the Cyclops that he should drink their wine that they were going to give to him since he is going to eat them. The Cyclops said okay and Odysseus made the Cyclops drink three times. The cyclops got drunk and fell asleep. That was when odysseus burned his stick and stabbed his eye and burned everything around his eye. The next morning the Cyclops brought out his sheep, Odysseus and his crew were under the sheep. When the sheep were far away from the cave they sailed away.
6. Odysseus bragged to the Cyclops that he was Odysseus. He is a little bit proud and thinks he`s the best.
7. The soothsayer that an augur once lived here, a man most worthy, excelling all in what would com, a seer grown old among us: Telemus, great son of Eurymus.
8. The Cyclops asked his father Poseidon to make Odysseus to not come home and suffer on the ocean and for a long time not see his family.

4)The name Odysseus gave the Cyclops, was “No-one”. And when the Cyclops asked him who was hurting him he said no-one so he paid no attention to him.
5)They got out of the cave by going under the sheep, and when the sheep got out of the cave, they got out too.

1. The Lotus flower clouds the mind into wanting to stay and eat the flowers and it makes you forget what you really want.
2. The Boulder was so heavy that 20 teams of horses wouldn’t have been able to move it. The Cyclops picks up two of Odysseus’s men and bashes their brains in and then he ate them raw, bones and guts and all.
3. Odysseus didn’t kill the Cyclops because he wanted the Cyclops to suffer for killing his friends.
4. Odysseus introduces himself as no one, then when they put the stick inside the Cyclops eye he started yelling which brought other Cyclopes to Polyphemus door asking if anyone was hurting him but when Polyphemus said Odysseus supposed name no one the Cyclopes told him to pipe down and they left. This saved Odysseus and his men from death.
5. Odysseus hangs all of his men from sheep and himself also, then when Polyphemus herded his flock of sheep out Odysseus and his men were taken from the cave and into the fields.
6. Odysseus told Polyphemus his real name and then he insulted Polyphemus. This tells me that Odysseus knows how good he is at everything and that he also likes to brag about it.
7. The Soothsayer told the Cyclops that Odysseus would come to their island and blind Polyphemus but Polyphemus was looking for a great man not a clever little man who Odysseus is.
8. Polyphemus asked Poseidon to crush Odysseus’s ship and to make it very hard for Odysseus come home to his Kingdom or his family.

1) The effect of Lotus was that, once they tried it, they wanted more and more! They forgot about their trip home and wanted to stay.
2) Cyclob’s door is so heavy that twenty teams of horses wouldn’t be able to even budge it. The fist villainous thing Cyclobs does is grab two of Odyssues’s men, bashed their heads on the ground and then he eats them raw, picking them apart and poking them in his mouth, bones and guts and all.
3) Odyssues doesn’t kill Cyclobs when he has the chance because only he could unstopper the mouth of the cave.
4) Odyssues said his name is Nobody, and when he hurt Cyclobs they asked who did that to him, he yells nobody!
5) When Cyclobs goes to pasture his flocks Odyssues took his walking stick, he cut in half and sharpened it, then he heated up the pointy oart then hid it under the maneuver, then he gave him wine and then he fell asleep, Odyssues took the stick and ran and poked it in his eyes, Cyclobs jumped up screaming and opened the cave and ran outside. Odyssues had the chance to run, and they did. And they hurried and sailed off.
6) The foolish thing Odyssues does is he told Cyclons his name and this seems like he is proud of what he did and he thinks he’s unstoppable.
7) The soothsayer predicts that Cyclobs that he will call out to his father and make it hell for him out in the ocean.
8) Cyclobs asked his father Poseidon, to destroy Odyssues ship.
